    Do You Recognize This Man?

    Malcolm Jamal Warner at Myspace
    Malcolm-Jamal Warner
at Myspace.. Gee, I think I've mentioned him before in
a Six Degrees of a Jersey Nation post.
I enjoy his work as a poet and musician. If you recognize him, then you know him also as Theo Huxtable from the Cosby Show and possibly his own show Malcolm and Eddie. He maintains his MySpace page himself, unlike some other celebrities.

I also recommend you check out Dr. Cornel West's page there.
I'd be surprised if Dr. West maintains his own MySpace page, but if he does, cool! Click here.
I used to give out Westie Awards on the Web when I was a member of BlackPlanet, many moons ago. Loved seeing him in The Matrix. (And what about the story that a black woman wrote The Matrix? Did she win her case yet? Read more here)

Other than Cornel West and Malcolm Jamal Warner, MySpace has an array of spoken word poets. Some of the poets I've noticed there include Taalam Acey, Mos Def, Linda DiFeterici, Helena D. Lewis, Keith Roach, Carlos Andrés Gómez, Sharam Shiva, well more than I can name here.

Why am I noticing who's on MySpace? While being late to the table, I have a page there too.

Continued from Creative Conversatin' With Angela Kinamore and Aberjhani Part 2
Angela: Other favorites include Randall Robinson’s new book Quitting America and books by Octavia Butler. Presently, I’m enjoying the writing style of an intriguing science fiction book by Sandra Jackson-Opoku called The River Where Blood is Born.

Aberjhani: During your presentation at the Savannah Literary Festival a couple of years ago, you surprised a lot of people when you actually sang and hit some serious notes like somebody on Broadway. Where did that come from?

Angela: I’ve had a desire to sing all my life. I sang in choirs. I took voice lessons off and on for about 10 years when my children were small. Working in New York City gave me access to study with some wonderful voice teachers and coaches (including noted baritone Benjamin Matthews). During the past 20 years I’ve written many songs. After I’ve completed my writing projects, one of my goals is to focus more on my songwriting and singing.

Aberjhani: You’ve told me before that you actually dream music at times, hearing melodies or words that you will wake up and write down or record in some other manner, so obviously music is a powerful creative force in your life. As a singer, what or who have been some of your most important influences?

Angela: I love all types of music––especially “Old School.” My favorite female singers include Sarah Vaughn, Patti Labelle, Melba Moore, Roberta Flack, Shirley Bassy, Ella Fitzgerald, Denise Williams, Stephanie Mills, and Barbara Streisand.

Aberjhani: And as if writing, editing, and singing were not enough, you’re also taking classes at New Jersey City University with plans to eventually obtain a PhD. Where do you see all these combined pursuits leading you?

Aberjhani: I see a future where my work continues to move to the next level, like into movies and licensing of products.

Aberjhani: Do you see any limits to your creative expressiveness?

Angela: Not at all. There is a lot that goes on inside of me, a lot of things I still have to express.

Aberjhani: And yet you already express yourself in so many creative ways that it can sometimes be dizzying to keep up with your different activities. How does Angela Kinamore keep up with Angela Kinamore?

Angela: I can sum that up in one word—GOD! That’s the source of my strength and inspiration. Each morning I take time to do my spiritual exercise, which is similar to contemplation or prayer. I strive to stay positive and optimistic about life. I continue to learn more about myself and what my purpose is. I focus on the things that matter most to me, like spending time with my granddaughter and other family members. That’s what keeps me going and on track.

Aberjhani: Thank you Angela for taking time out of your very busy schedule for some fun and enlightening Creative Conversatin’.

Angela: Thank you for inviting me to participate. I look forward to coming back to your site and reading the other articles in this series.

Special thanks to Nordette Adams for opening the pages of NJ Spoken Word to CREATIVE CONVERSATIN’. Please join us at The Black Skylark Z-Ped Music Player for future monthly installments of "CREATIVE CONVERSATIN."

Sunday, October 3, 2004  Definitely Helena continued...
Recently Helena, who's branched into acting and modeling, was cast as a college professor in a cable television pilot. However after she had worked several weeks, the director recast her role and the roles of several other actors. She was told they wanted someone who looked older. Helena, 37, could pass easily still for a college student.

See her perform live during her next major spoken word project, “More Than Words.” The performance is scheduled for November 6 at Luna Stage in Montclair, NJ. It will be an ensemble production featuring Helena and seven other talented spoken word artists. Visit Helena’s site here: HDLPoet

And make sure you check her blog here: HDLPoet's Journal, which gives the names of those connected to the show (Flow, D the Schizophrenic, Big Mike, Adrian, Jerry Gant and Skillz). Read her in her own words, and you'll get a much higher zap of Helena's energy.
